Changes to Google My Business Profiles with Service Areas

Heads up! If you currently have a distance-based service area set up on your Google My Business profile, this is something you should be aware of.
Some businesses, like plumbers, go to their customers instead of the customers coming to them. For businesses like this, it was previously possible to set a radius as a service area. For example, if you served, Calgary, Airdrie, and Okotoks, you could set your radius to the center of Calgary +100km.

Google is phasing out these distance-based service areas. They will be automatically converting these areas to the closest named areas (Ie: Calgary +100km will become serving Calgary, Airdrie, and Okotoks). Google My Business account managers will be able to review these updates after logging into their account.

If your listing is affected, you’ll see an “Updates from Google” notification at the top of the page when you log in. If you click that notification, you’ll have the option to accept Google’s changes or provide a new service area based on the city, postal code, or other areas that you serve. This will allow you to add any additional service areas you would like included.

Seeing as this could affect your search visibility in your service areas, and a customers’ ability to find your business’ information, this is something you should be aware of and check. We typically advise against using a service area as it can have negative implications to your Google Maps search rankings.
