Most A/B testing guides are written for e-commerce sites with thousands of daily visitors. But when you’re driving organic traffic to landing pages for CNC machines, industrial sensors, or process automation systems, you’re working with a completely different reality. Your traffic is lower, your prospects are more technical, and your sales cycles are measured in quarters, not days.

The gap between consumer A/B testing advice and what actually works for industrial lead generation is massive.

Split testing (also called A/B testing) involves comparing two versions of a landing page to see which generates more qualified leads. You send half your traffic to version A, half to version B, and measure which performs better.

But here’s where industrial marketers need to think differently. When you’re generating 300 landing page visitors per month instead of 30,000, and your sales cycle runs 9-14 months, you can’t approach testing the same way a SaaS company does. You need to be more surgical about what you test and more patient about when you act on results.

You create two versions of a landing page with one meaningful difference between them. Your traffic gets randomly split between the two. You measure conversions. When you hit statistical significance, the winner becomes your control, and you test something new against it.

The mechanics are simple. The strategy is where industrial marketers separate themselves. You’re dealing with multiple buyer personas, long consideration periods, and technical audiences who can smell marketing fluff from a mile away. Your test design needs to account for all of this.

Can You A/B Test Landing Pages on Different Websites?

You can, but you’re introducing variables that make interpretation difficult. If your .com domain has more authority than your campaign subdomain, that’s going to skew results. If one domain loads faster, that affects conversions independent of your page content.

The only time this makes sense is when you’re testing whether a dedicated campaign domain outperforms landing pages on your main site, which is actually a legitimate question for many industrial marketers. Just make sure the pages are otherwise identical so you’re isolating the domain variable.

The temptation is to test your highest-traffic page first. But traffic alone doesn’t tell you where the opportunity lives. Look for the intersection of three factors: 

  1. Pages with meaningful traffic
  2. Pages where prospects are engaging (time on page, scroll depth, returning visitors)
  3. Pages where conversion rates suggest something isn’t connecting

That third point is critical. If you have a landing page that gets 100 visitors per month, average time on page is three minutes, but only two people convert, that’s your signal. People are interested enough to read, but something about your positioning, proof, or ask isn’t resonating. That’s a page worth testing.

Start with a question about your buyers, not a hypothesis about conversion optimization. Instead of “Will a green button convert better than a blue button?” ask “Do our prospects respond better to technical specifications or business outcomes?” Instead of “Should we shorten our form?” ask “At what point in their research are prospects ready to share their company information?”

Frame your first test as an investment in market understanding. You’re not trying to squeeze out a 10% lift in conversions. You’re trying to figure out something fundamental about how your buyers think. Do they care more about your process or your results? Do they want to see customer logos or detailed case studies? Do they need social proof or technical validation?

This mindset shift changes what you measure. Success isn’t just a higher conversion rate. Success is learning something that informs every landing page you build going forward. If you test technical depth versus business benefits and business benefits win, you haven’t just improved one page. You’ve learned something about your entire content strategy.

Here’s your starting point: pull your landing page analytics for the last 90 days. Identify your top five pages by traffic. For each one, calculate your engagement rate (time on page over 90 seconds) and your conversion rate. The page with high engagement but low conversion is your first test candidate.

Then ask yourself one question: what am I assuming about what these buyers need to see to trust us enough to convert? Whatever assumption you identify, that’s your test. Create a version that challenges that assumption and see what happens.

The data will tell you something. And in industrial marketing, where every qualified lead matters and every test takes months to run, learning something valuable is infinitely more useful than optimizing for marginal gains you can’t sustain anyway.

Start with one meaningful test. Let it run until you have clarity. Learn something that changes how you think about your buyers. Then do it again.
