The People vs. Instagram

Knowing your target audience is basically page #1 in every digital marketing textbook, yet somehow Instagram still forgot theirs…🤭

Recently, Instagram tried to shake things up with some very TikTok-esque updates to their platform. Here’s what their updates entailed: 

✅ A full-screen home feed

✅ A feed full of recommended posts

✅ A greater push for video content

But, once the update went into testing, Instagram users were straight up unimpressed. 

An Instagram story went viral that stated, “Make Instagram, Instagram again. (stop trying to be tiktok i just want to see cute photos of my friends.) Sincerely, everyone.”

Shortly after, Instagram Head, Adam Mosseri, published a video announcing that they would be retracting their update due to the criticism…yikes! 

As a supposed “market leader”, Instagram’s effort to copy its competitors was not a great look.

Moral of the story ➡️ Having a keen awareness of your target audience is critical to the success of your business. Otherwise, you risk alienating your audience and turning away prospective customers.
