Google has been waging a war on non encrypted sites over the last few months displaying a “Not Secure” message in Chrome on more and more sites.Back in January Chrome started displaying a “Not Secure” message in the URL bar for sites that were collecting passwords or credit card information and weren’t encrypted. Coming in October 2017 they are widening the number of non encrypted sites that will be display the “Not Secure” message.

Not Secure URLs

Websites that collect any user data – including any type of form on your site such as a contact form or appointment form on your site will be flagged. Considering that almost all websites have some sort of form, we foresee that a high percentage of non encrypted sites will display the “Not Secure” message in the Chrome URL bar.

Why Should I Care About the Not Secure Message?

The “Not Secure” warning is Google’s way of telling users not to give information to the website they are on. More and more users are becoming aware that it is just not credit card information or passwords they need to protect. If their name, phone number or email gets into the wrong hands it can cause some major hassles.

Google is making it clear to users which websites are protecting their information and which ones aren’t, in an effort to protect more users. If your website displays the “Not Secure” warning you will see a decrease in conversions.

This “Not Secure” flag can be concerning for users, taking away from the credibility of your website.

What is Site Encryption?

Site encryption is implemented on most websites using an SSL certificate. You can tell if a website is using an SSL certificate because the URL will include https:// instead of http://. An SSL certificate will encrypt the website it is installed on ensuring user entered data is protected. This provides a secure experience for your users, so they are comfortable entering the information you need to sell them products or reach them.

The best part is that in most cases SSL transitions are fairly easy and inexpensive to do.
